Elective Course OfferingsDance: This course provides beginning instruction in dance as personal expression and a form of communication. Students learn to create compositions, become aware of the cultural and gender roles of dance in history, and develop an appreciation of dance in its many styles as an art form.
Art: This course builds upon students’ individual skills in visual arts. The focus is on applying elements and principles of design to interpret the environment, to elaborate on an idea, and to use as a means of communication. Students use creative and critical thinking skills as they study the purpose and function of art, the history of art, and the impact of art in cultures. Chorus: Students learn beginning singing techniques within an ensemble setting. Singing experiences will be provided for all students with special instruction for those with changing voices. In addition to music skills, students will demonstrate skills of cooperation, and learn to compromise and be team players. Spanish: This course provides an introduction to Spanish with an emphasis on basic communication and cultural concepts. Keyboarding and Basic Word Processing: This course is comprised of a series of instructional modules designed to provide project-based instruction in basic keying skills, computer concepts and software applications. The four modules covered are alpha keys, number/symbol keys, building speed and accuracy and basic business correspondences. Project Lead the Way (PLTW) - Design and Modeling: This course is an introduction to engineering course where Students investigate, research, and compare topics and careers in the STEM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math). Students apply the design process to solve problems and understand the influence of creativity and innovation in their lives and around the world. They work in teams to design real world applications such as hover crafts, airplanes, cars, catapults, 3D printing and more. Project Lead the Way (PLTW) - Science of Technology: This course is an introduction to engineering course designed by the Project Lead the Way program and sponsored by Duke University. This course supports students in applying concepts of physics, chemistry, and nanotechnology to STEM activities and projects, including making icecream, cleaning up an oil spill, and discovering the properties of nano-materials. Band: This course provides beginning class instruction in playing a musical instrument. Level I performance standards for band are achieved. Band instruments may be leased or purchased from local music dealers Orchestra: This course provides beginning instruction in playing violin, viola, cello, or bass. Level I performance standards for orchestra are achieved. Fitness: Students learn how to live healthy lifestyles with both their body and mind. Yoga and Mindfulness: This course is designed to relieve stress and build calm, confidence and strength in the classroom with simple and effective yoga and mindfulness strategies. Student Leadership: This course is being offered as an extension of our magnet programming. Students will learn to develop individual and group leadership skills to impact their lives and their communities. |
